How to Draft

At the start of booster draft, separate all the cards in the cube to create "packs" of 15 cards each. Each player opens a booster pack and picks a single card. (Don't show the other players what you pick!) Then everyone passes the rest of their pack to the player on their left, each player then picks a card from the pack they just received before passing again. This process continues until all the cards in those packs have been drafted. Then each player opens a second pack, but this time, you pass the pack to your right. After all those cards are drafted, you do the same with the third pack, passing to the left again. Once you all run out of cards, it's time to build The Deck!

Deck Construction

You'll have to build your deck as you draft, which can be a daunting task. But there's 3 different ways to make the drafting mini game easier. Card evaluation, mana curve, And drafting an archetype.

Card Evaluation:

Not all cards are created equal. Some are just stronger than others. A good rule of thumb is to use "Bread" Aim to draft only BRE if you can help it!

B- Bombs, the cards that will win you the game if they go unanswered.

R- Removal spells, to kill the opponent's bombs

E- Evasion creatures, or ones with good abilities

A- Additional cards. They aren't amazing, but they will fill out the deck.

D- Drops. You don't want to play these cards if you can help it.

Also don't forget to look at both sides of he cards for flip cards.

Mana curve

If you drafted a more aggressive deck, you want your deck to have more 2 mana value cards than 3 drops. In a midrange deck you will want more 3 drops, in a slower control deck, you'll want 4 and 5 drops! A good rule of thumb is to have 17 lands, 7 non creature spells, and 16 creatures. Use this curve as a good guideline.

Drafting an Archetype

It's important to know what cards to look for when you draft an archetype. You shouldn't force one though, just draft good cards, stay flexible and then see if an archetype comes together for you. Once you know what you are on, try to send a "signal" by making sure others notice that those cards or colors aren't being passed to them. It's good to pick up on others signals too, and abandon an archetype that is being cut from you!
